Photodynamic therapy, also called Blue Light therapy, is a new alternative to traditional acne treatments, including prescription oral and topical medications. The combination of a topical photosensitizer, Levulan®, and a light source, BLU-U®, can significantly improve acne. With the growing concern over antibiotic resistance, and hesitiation by some patients in using Accutane, this new form of acne treatment offers a promising alternative. After several treatments spaced a few weeks apart, most patients can experience approximately 70-80% clearance and can remain clear for up to six months.
What treatment consists of:
Initially, the area to be treated is coated with the photosensitizing chemical, Levulan®, a compound of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Levulan occurs naturally in the body and, when applied topically, "shuts down" the sebaceous glands. The Levulan® is allowed to incubate on the skin for several minutes and then is exposed to the visible light generated by the BLU-U®. As exposure to the light source continues, the chemical photosensitizer is activated causing the destruction of the absorbing target, the sebaceous glands. Additionally, substances within the acne-causing bacteria, P. acnes, that are present in the sebaceous gland, are activated as well, resulting is destruction of the bacteria and thus fewer acne lesions.
What to expect during and after treatment:
During the treatment, a mild stinging or burning sensation may be experienced. Most patients tolerate this very well. Typical treatment exposure lasts from 8 to16 minutes. Following treatment, a "sunburn" type feeling is typically experienced for the first 24 hour period. Redness, mild swelling, slight crusting and blistering are possible side effects. These symptoms typically resolve within several days. As with any acne treatment, initial flaring may occur and can be treated with traditional topical therapies as well as oral antibiotics. For your convenience, a Pre/Post Operative Care sheet is available for viewing. Acne phototherapy consists of several treatments (a minimum of 3) spaced approximately two weeks apart. Following a series of treatments, most patients will experience a 70-80% clearance of their acne which may last up to six months. Combining acne phototherapy with topicals and oral antibiotics may be very effective in providing longer lasting results.
